How to become a Midwife

A midwife is someone who provides personal support and care to women (and their families) during and after pregnancy. Using their skills, training and knowledge, Midwives offer strong support to expectant mothers and facilitate them in performing day-to-day life activities. Common task-list for a midwife includes performing clinical examinations, offering general health guidance & advice and supporting the mother-to-be all throughout the period of their pregnancy. In addition to that, Midwives regularly record the progress of the baby and the mother, and work in collaboration with other health/social services providers which the mother might need.

The Benefits

1) Doing a short course in midwifery can pay you off in the long run as currently there is a national shortage of well-trained and professional midwives.

2) Up on successful completion of your course/training, you'll automatically become eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

The Work

After you've completed your training and acquired the necessary qualification, you will have a number of options available to you in terms of where you decide to work. You could work in NHS Hospitals (paying you up to £25,000 annually), Private Hospitals, and Maternity/Birth Centres etc. Or, you could become self-employed and be your own boss by working independently with different customers.
Provided that you’re good at what you do, you could go onto becoming a Consultant Midwife (earning up to £70,000 per year)
Last but not least, like in every other profession, as a professional Midwife it is expected of you to stay current with the emerging trends and knowledge in the field of Midwifery.
